My Background
Lori McCarthy maintains a piano studio in Chevy Chase, Maryland. She holds Bachelor of Arts in Music, Magna Cum Laude with General Honors and Master of Music in Piano Performance degrees from the University of Maryland. She is an MTNA Nationally Certified Teacher of Music. Lori is Past-President of the Washington Music Teachers Association, Past President of the Montgomery County Music Teachers Association, former Chair of the Music Theory Testing Program for the Maryland State Music Teachers Association, and is a member of Mensa. Past teaching experience includes elementary classroom teaching at Our Lady of Lourdes School in Bethesda, former Director of Early Childhood Music at The Academy of Fine Arts in Gaithersburg, and positions as an early childhood music teacher at various preschools in the DC area. Lori has completed training in the Music Mind Games program.
Sharing my Passion
While the focus of my students’ study is piano performance, they all participate in a weekly music technology lab, which enhances and broadens the their musical study. Students drill theory concepts, record, compose, and evaluate their playing through the use of software and digital equipment. In the private studio, I have found that the use of technology keeps young students engaged, motivated and helps to foster a lifelong love of music. Some of my students have gone on to major or minor in music in college in the areas of music education, composition, and performance.

I offer both group and private lessons, both in-person and virtual through FaceTime or Zoom.
